Gameweek 3 Preview: Is It Time to Triple Captain Haaland?

Should you use the Triple Captain chip on Erling Haaland in Gameweek 3? A look at his form, numbers and Manchester City’s home fixture against Coventry.

As Gameweek 3 approaches, fantasy managers are starting to think about the chips — especially Triple Captain. Is this the moment to use it on Erling Haaland?

The fixture looks extremely attractive. Manchester City host Coventry, and Haaland arrives after scoring twice against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2 for a 13-point return.

Haaland is in good form

His blank against Bournemouth in Gameweek 1 was not especially worrying because the underlying numbers were strong: five shots, two on target and 0.68 xG.

In Gameweek 2 he converted that threat into two goals and collected all three bonus points.

Our captain tool currently projects around 7.5 points for Haaland in Gameweek 3, which would translate into roughly 21–24 points if the Triple Captain chip is used.

Coventry: the perfect opponent?

Coventry lost their first two Premier League matches, 3-0 to Arsenal and 1-0 to Hull, without scoring a goal.

City, meanwhile, arrive after a 4-1 away win at Crystal Palace, with Haaland once again one of the leading candidates for a major haul.

Should you use Triple Captain?

For me, this is one of the best early opportunities to use the chip, although the decision depends on your appetite for risk.

If you choose not to use it against Coventry, there should be later opportunities, including a Gameweek 7 home match against Ipswich and a Gameweek 16 home match against Hull City.

Right now, though, Haaland is fit, in form and facing an opponent that looks extremely favourable.
