Arsenal appear to have identified Ezri Konsa as an ideal option to cover William Saliba when the French defender is unavailable, and the move makes more sense the deeper you look.
When Saliba is missing, Arsenal do not simply need a centre-back who can defend. Mikel Arteta also needs someone capable of handling pressure and building from the back.
Konsa stands out in that area. The article cites a 92.5% pass-completion rate under high-intensity pressure last season, the highest in the Premier League.
That matters in Arteta’s system. An Arsenal defender cannot simply clear the ball at the first sign of pressure; he has to receive, make the right decision and help the team play through the press.
Konsa therefore looks like a natural option when Saliba is absent.
But his value is not limited to being a backup. Even when Saliba is available, Konsa can contribute because he is comfortable at centre-back and on the right side of defence.
That flexibility gives Arteta more solutions in different match situations. Arsenal would not be signing him simply as “Saliba’s reserve”, but as a defender who raises the depth and adaptability of the entire back line.
