Everything You Need to Know About Manchester United’s Pre-Season

The key signs from Manchester United’s preparations: Mbeumo, Amad and Zirkzee, the new high press, the left-back issue and Rashford’s future.

Manchester United enter the new season looking noticeably different, not only because of changes to the squad but also because of a clear shift in playing style.

Pre-season produced encouraging signs in attack, while also exposing problems that still need solutions — especially at left-back and in the defensive line when the team presses high.

Mbeumo and Amad bring the attack back to life

Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo were among the biggest positives of pre-season. Mbeumo looked physically and technically ready, while Amad appeared to regain much of his confidence after his World Cup involvement with Ivory Coast.

If both remain in good condition, United will have more attacking solutions, especially as the team tries to play faster and press opponents from the front.

Zirkzee: has he finally found his role?

Joshua Zirkzee looked completely different from the player many remembered from last season. He appeared more confident and influential, including an excellent display against Leeds United.

His role may not be limited to centre-forward. His ability to move between the lines could allow him to operate behind the striker and provide an alternative or support option to Bruno Fernandes as a No.10.

If this level continues, United may effectively discover a new signing already inside the squad.

A new style: high pressing is a double-edged sword

One of the clearest tactical changes was a move toward aggressive, high pressing. Instead of dropping off and waiting, United are trying to win the ball higher up the pitch and press immediately after losing it.

The idea is attractive but risky. Against Milan, the spaces behind the defensive line were repeatedly exposed in a 4-2 defeat. When so many players press forward, the back line must be quick enough to cover large spaces.

Left-back: the problem that cannot be delayed

United clearly need a fast left-back capable of recovering into space. Luke Shaw offers experience and quality when fit, but relying on him throughout a long season is a risk because of his injury history.

With the new high press, recovery speed becomes even more important. A new left-back would therefore be more than extra depth; he could be a key part of making the system work.

Rashford: back, but with an open future

Marcus Rashford remains one of the most debated issues around the club. After the end of his Barcelona loan, he returned with positive energy, and the manager has expressed enthusiasm about working with him again.

That keeps the door open to him staying, although a transfer is still possible before the window closes. Rashford would want an elite destination, while the terms and value of his contract make any deal complicated.

Are Manchester United really ready?

Pre-season offered hope but also showed how much work remains. Mbeumo and Amad look sharper, Zirkzee is re-emerging, and United are trying to play with greater aggression.

But the left-back position and the space behind the defence still need answers, while Rashford’s future is unresolved. The attack offers hope — but the defence may determine how far this team can go.
