Family Comes First

Eren Dinkçi returned to Werder Bremen on loan so he could stay close to his partner during her leukemia treatment.

In a deeply human story, Eren Dinkçi did everything he could to stand beside his partner during one of the most difficult periods of her life.

The German player returned to former club Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Freiburg, in a deal reported to be worth around €400,000.

The decision was not primarily about football. Dinkçi’s partner is undergoing treatment for leukemia, and she wanted to return to her city so that she could go through treatment close to her family.

Dinkçi wanted to be beside her throughout the process. Freiburg and coach Julian Schuster fully understood the situation and helped make the move to Bremen possible.

The couple also tried to turn their difficult experience into a way of helping other people. Since the beginning of the year, they have supported awareness campaigns and stem-cell donation drives, encouraging thousands of people to register as potential donors.

Football headlines are often dominated by transfers, fees and contracts. Dinkçi’s story is a reminder that some things are bigger than all of that.

In the end, family comes first. ❤️
